Nintendo Switch: President apologizes for Joy-Con drift – and now?

Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa has officially commented on the far-reaching Joy Con drift problem and apologized. But what does this mean for those affected and future Joy-Con?

For a long time, Nintendo swept the Switch’s joy-con drift problem under the carpet and made no or inadequate comments. Now company president Shuntaro Furukawa officially addressed the topic in a Q&A for investors. He said literally: “Regarding Joy-Con, we apologize for any problems we have caused our customers. We continue to work on improving our products. However, since Joy-Con is the subject of a class action lawsuit in the United States and it it’s still an outstanding issue, we’re refraining from commenting on concrete measures. ”

In 2019, a US law firm asked for victims to file a class action lawsuit against Nintendo for defective products. Shortly thereafter, the Japanese company responded to the lawsuit in some countries with free Joy-Con repairs. Finally, in September, the Switch Lite was released, a smaller version of the console, the controllers of which are firmly connected to the rest of the hardware. A repair is only possible by sending in the entire device. Just one week after the launch of the Lite, this was also included in the class action lawsuit.

Especially last year, Joy-Con drifts became a real problem for Nintendo. A significant number of switch owners reported that the analog sticks of their controllers that could be attached to the console sooner or later behaved incorrectly and transmitted inputs without actuation. Depending on the title, some software became unplayable. Repairs do not solve the problem permanently.

It is a first admission on the part of Nintendo, but what concrete measures the company intends to take remains open.
