Nintendo Switch is the best-selling console of July (and 2020) in the United States

NPD, an analyst group specialized in the video game market, today published its report on the number of video games and consoles purchased by US citizens during the month of July. In games the most sold has been Ghost of Tsushima, like it was in Spain during the same month, while in video consoles it has been Nintendo Switch the one that has taken the first place on the list.

Nintendo’s hybrid machine currently holds three records in the United States: the one that has sold the most units, the one that has raised the most dollars and the most sold so far this year. In this way Nintendo Switch certifies the success it is reaping in the American country, but also throughout the world: last June 30 the company updated its financial data revealing that in total they already have 61.44 million consoles sold.

PS4 and Xbox One deflate before the arrival of the next-gen

On the other hand, PS4 and Xbox One are experiencing a decline in console sales. Until now they had remained afloat thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, whose consequent isolation caused a flood of purchases of video consoles. However, it seems that now that begins to deflate in the face of the arrival of the new generation: Xbox Series X has already announced that comes out in november and it is more than likely that PS5 will follow in its footsteps.

This year it seems that Americans have spent less on video consoles during the month of July: specifically 166 million dollars have been invested, 2% less than what was spent in July 2019. Even so, the total sales of video consoles this year amounted to 1.8 trillion US dollars, which is 22% more than they had been raised in July of last year thanks, again, to the coronavirus.

Talking about video game we already said at the beginning that the most sold has been Ghost of Tsushima, which is already the fifth best-selling game of 2020. It follows Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, always present on this list, and Paper Mario: The Origami King, which has managed to double the sales that Paper Mario: The Millennial Door made in its launch month. The Last of Us Parte II also sneaks into the ranking in a fourth place that is also worth to become in the third best-selling Sony exclusive in company history.
