According to Digital Foundry Direct Weekly, citing several developers, Nintendo considered a Switch Pro, but it was ultimately cancelled.

Medium editor John Linneman said: “From what I’ve talked to various developers about, there was some sort of mid-term Switch upgrade plan, but it doesn’t seem to happen anymore. So it’s clear that whatever what they (referring to Nintendo) will be doing next. Whatever, it’s really going to be next-gen hardware, and I don’t think it’s going to be 2023.”

Linneman speculates that Switch Pro was canceled in part because Nintendo feared another situation with Gamecube or Wii U, both of which sold poorly.

According to the latest estimated console sales report from VGChartz, as of December 3, 2022, global sales of Nintendo Switch consoles have exceeded 118.2 million units.

This also allowed Switch to successfully surpass SONY PS4’s 117.03 million units, taking fourth place in global console sales.
