The Edmonton Oilers took a major step toward the NHL playoffs with a 4-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.
The team around national ice hockey player Leon Draisaitl increased its lead over Vegas in the Pacific Division to seven points.
Six games are still outstanding in the main round. The Oilers are second in their division behind the already qualified Calgary Flames, with Vegas fourth. The top three are guaranteed a ticket to the playoffs. In third place are the Los Angeles Kings with former national coach Marco Sturm on the coaching staff. The Kings have a one-point lead over Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, Tim Stützle extended his points streak to eight games and scored another brace. In the 4:5 after the Ottawa Senators overtime against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Stützle scored to make it 1:0 and 4:3 and now has 20 goals this season. The 20-year-old from Viersen has scored in four of the last five games, in each of the last three games. He had already scored a brace against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. He has been involved in at least one Senators goal in the past eight games. Ottawa no longer has a chance of making the playoffs.
