NHL: Marko Daňo is leaving overseas, he will play for the Třinec Steelworks

Slovak hockey forward Marko Daňo is returning to Europe overseas after eight seasons, in the new year he will play in the Czech extra league for the Oceláři Třinec club.

Dukla Trenčín’s offspring was drafted into the NHL in 2013 by Columbus Blue Jackets in the 1st round from 27th place. In the following season 13/14 he spent part of the season in HC Slovan in the KHL and then went to the farm in the AHL.

Since then, he has fought for a place in the first team in the NHL, the most successful from 2014 to 2018, during which time he played 107 games for Columbus, Chicago and Winnipeg. In the following season 18/19 he started 23 more duels, but then he stopped doing well.

He was exchanged for Colorado, where he played only eight matches, the following year he went back to Columbus, where he got a chance in only three duels. In the last season, which was affected by the injury he suffered at the beginning of the season in Dukla Trenčín, he did not look in the NHL.

He played a total of 141 duels in the profile with a balance of 19 goals and 26 assists. He played 204 matches in the AHL, in which he scored 34 goals and 70 assists.

In Třinec, he signed a two-month contract with an option until the end of the season. “Marko is a quality striker. We expect points from him, he is very strong on the puck, he walks in front of the goal and wins personal fights. He is a very powerful skater, ” said coach Václav Varaďa.

He has also won four world championships at the age of 26 and was part of the national team that recently made it to the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

It will expand its numerous Slovak representation in Třinec, with Martin Marinčin, Vladimír Dravecký, Patrik Hrehorčák, Tomáš Marcinko and Miloš Roman working in the club. The winner of the last two years of the Czech extra league will be presented at the beginning of October in Bratislava, where he will play with Slovan within the Champions League.

From 1995 to 2001, his father Jozef Daňo also worked in the club, gaining 190 points in 238 matches and helping to make it to the highest competition. Today he works as an assistant coach at HC Frýdek-Místek, which is a farm club in Třinec.
