Twenty-five-year-old Kubalík finished third in the poll of the Association of Professional Hockey Journalists behind Makar and American quarterback Quinn Hughes from Vancouver, who were the main favorites.

The Pilsen offspring gained 554 points, he was not in first place on any of the 170 questionnaires and only on two he got to the second position. Makar reigned with 1538 points and 116 voters had him as the first choice. Hughes lost 201 points to him.

Czech hockey was represented among NHL winners this year thanks to gunner David Pastrňák, who won the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy for the best scorer with 48 goals together with the Russian Alexander Ovečkin from Washington. Until this season, the last winner in 2016 was Jaromír Jágr, who received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for endurance, sportsmanship and devotion to hockey.

But Pastrňák, like other awards, lost the traditional June announcement of the NHL Awards in Las Vegas, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and eventually took place in an improvised format.

The Boston Gunner also made it to the season’s first All Star team, along with Draisaitl, another New York Rangers striker Artemie Panarin, Nashville’s Roman Jose defender, Washington’s John Carlson and Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck.

Among the top six of the league, Pastrňák is the first Czech since 2015 after another forward Jakub Voráček from Philadelphia. Striker Jaromír Jágr joined the first All Star team seven times (in 1995, 1996 and 1998 to 2001 in the Pittsburgh jersey and in 2006 as a New York Rangers player), goalkeeper Dominik Hašek six times (1994, 1995, 1997 to 1999 and 2001 while working in Buffalo) and once by Patrik Eliáš from New Jersey (2001).

Kubalík in the All Star team of newcomers

Kubalík was included in the All Star team of newcomers along with other strikers Victor Olofsson from Buffalo, Nick Suzuki from Montreal, Beka Makar and Hughes and goalkeeper Elvis Merzlikins from Columbus. He was included in the selection as the first representative from the Czech Republic since 2014, when the forward Ondřej Palát from Tampa Bay succeeded.

Before that, the attackers David Volek from New York Islanders (1989), Jágr from Pittsburgh (1991), Petr Sýkora (1996) with Eliáš from New Jersey (1999), Milan Hejduk from Colorado (1999), Martin Havlát from Ottawa (2001), goalkeeper Hašek from Chicago (1992) and back Rostislav Klesla from Columbus (2002).

No Czech hockey player has won the Calder Trophy yet. Eliáš, Hejduk, Havlát and Palát were also among Kubalík among the three finalists.

Kubalík, who headed to Chicago before the season from the Swiss club Ambri-Piotta with 30 goals from 68 matches, ruled the newcomers by 10 goals ahead of the Swede Olofsson and the Russian Denis Gurjanov from Dallas. With 46 points, he was third behind Hughes (53 points) and Makar (50). But he controlled the statistics with 38 points and 26 goals with the full number of players on the ice and with 157 shots on goal.

Twenty-four-year-old Draisaitl achieved the most valuable two trophies after sovereignly securing the Art Ross Trophy for the most productive player after the unfinished basic part of the NHL due to the coronavirus pandemic. He scored 110 points for 43 goals and 67 assists in 71 matches and surpassed the second Connor McDavid, his teammate, by 13 points.
