The NFL has released TV viewership figures for its five largest markets outside the US. The values have increased significantly compared to the previous year, although the NFL itself is now dispelling the media fairy tale of 1 billion TV viewers. A false report that has persisted for years.
How many watch the Super Bowl?
The league itself has 62.5 million viewers (23.1 million average) in its largest markets – Mexico, Canada, Germany, UK and Australia – who watched Super Bowl LVIII. This corresponds to an increase of 10 percent compared to 2023.
Internationally, 24.1 million tuned in to the game between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs from Mexico (Ø 8.7 M | +5%), 18.8 million from Canada (Ø 10.1 M | +16.5% ), 3.8 million from Germany (Ø 1.9 M | +13%), 3.7 million from the United Kingdom (Ø 1.2 M | +18%) and almost 3 million from Australia (Ø 1.2 M | +26%)
At least one has to ask a question mark about the published figures from Germany, which are specifically shown as TV viewership figures. The officially published figures are 2.12 million overall and 1.32 million in the advertising-relevant group. The of AGF and RTL published figures contradict the NFL’s numbers now. The assumption here is that when the NFL says “Germany” it also means Austria and Switzerland, or the entire DACH region. By the way, in Austria almost 170,000 watched the Super Bowl on RTL.
The NFL Gamepass numbers have not been published; according to information, viewership there is said to have increased by 61 percent in the week of Super Bowl LVIII compared to the previous year.
