Neymar’s Recovery Update: No Return Date Set

Brazilian national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar revealed the developments in the condition of national team star Neymar da Silva’s ruptured cruciate ligament.

Lasmar said that striker Neymar is recovering well from the knee surgery he underwent after his injury last month, but there are no expectations when he will return to the field.

Neymar suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee while participating with the national team. He underwent surgery earlier this month at Belo Horizonte Hospital.

Lasmar said in a press conference at the Brazilian national team’s training center in Tresópolis that the 31-year-old is responding “very well,” but the recovery will be long and he must focus on this process.

“He has shown from the first moment that he is doing what we suggest. He knows that it is a process during which he will need both of us, the physiotherapist and the fitness coach, so that we can recover him as soon as possible,” the doctor added.

Lasmar, who performed the surgery on the international striker, said that it is not yet possible to set a date for the return of the Saudi Al Hilal player.

He added, “Injuries vary from one player to another. In general, there are accompanying injuries that can be equally important, such as a meniscus injury. All of this makes the procedure more complicated with a slower recovery period. For this reason we are not talking about a timetable.”

Neymar joined the leaders of the Saudi Professional League last August for 90 million euros ($96.28 million), but the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain striker played only five matches because he was suffering from muscle injuries.

Brazil, which ranks third in the South American World Cup qualifiers with seven points, will meet Colombia, which is in fifth place with six points, the day after tomorrow, Thursday. It will host Argentina, the leader with 12 points, next Tuesday.

Lasmar also said that goalkeeper Ederson withdrew from the squad due to the injury he suffered during his team’s 4-4 draw with Manchester City in the English Premier League last Sunday.

Lasmar added, “He suffered a bruise in his foot in the last minutes of the match and was able to continue until the end, but the pain became severe. His foot swelled, making it difficult for him to walk.”
Atletico Paranaense goalkeeper Pinto was called up to replace him in the squad.
