When the season kicks off on March 18 and 20 with the Bahrain Grand Prix, Mercedes will contribute to the safety of the Championship with two models: The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series appears for the first time as an official F1® safety car , while the Mercedes AMG‑ GT 63 S 4MATIC+ makes its debut as an official medical car. The 2022 season will benefit from the most powerful variants ever made of these two vehicles.
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+, new official F1® medical car
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ makes its Formula 1® debut as the second official car, succeeding its predecessor, the C 63 S AMG Estate. The new official medical car can accommodate up to three doctors, including Dr Ian Roberts, the FIA medical rescue coordinator. The rear seats are occupied by one or two local doctors, who come from a specialist clinic located near the circuit concerned.
The medical car follows the Formula 1® peloton during the first lap because the traffic is particularly dense in this critical phase of the race. In the event of an incident, this enables medics to reach the scene of the accident as quickly as possible and begin administering first aid immediately. During the race, the official F1® medical car waits in the pit lane, next to the safety car.
The 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine delivers 639 hp and accelerates the four-door coupe from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. Its maximum speed is 315 km/h.
