Starting Tuesday, New York State will require a mandatory two-week quarantine for travelers from Puerto Rico, which is facing a spike in COVID-19 cases.

To ensure compliance with this guideline, the authorities will require visitors and tourists entering the state by air to fill out forms with all the information on their stay and accommodation. Visitors must also state their intention to remain in isolation for the required period.

Failing to comply with this requirement will expose people to a $ 2,000 fine, NBC New York reported.

At a press conference, Governor Andrew Cuomo reported that he added Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico to the list of high-risk states and jurisdictions.

Cuomo explained that the national landscape has become complicated in recent weeks and that the pandemic continues to spiral.

New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut require travelers from states with at least 10 daily COVID-19 cases (7-day average) per 100,000 residents to be quarantined upon arrival.

Today, the report of the Puerto Rico Department of Health reported eight deaths from COVID-19 and 167 confirmed cases of people infected with the virus. It also reported an additional 249 probable cases of people testing positive for a rapid test, which does not provide a confirmatory disease result.

With today’s announcement, the island and Washington DC join the list of 34 states that includes Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana , Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Yesterday, the US capital adopted a similar measure that imposes a 14-day quarantine on travelers from 27 of the 50 states in the country, including California, Florida and Texas, three of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
