New York wants to close non-essential businesses and schools due to the advance of cases

We’ve seen consistently high COVID-19 numbers in 9 zip codes across South Brooklyn, Far Rockaway and Central Queens. We’re providing these areas with additional resources, but when presented with new information, we must act. We won’t risk the progress we’ve made.

The closures would affect approximately to half a million people in neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens.

“This was not an easy choice to make. However, we must be proactive about the safety and health of New Yorkers“said Mayor De Blasio.” This is a precaution and will be done in coordination with a broader strategy that reflects what we did successfully in the spring, “he added.

If the measure is approved, it will be the first time that New York – which had largely controlled the coronavirus after an initial catastrophic outbreak – has been forced to reverse the lack of focus.

Almost 24,000 people died in the city from the coronavirus. New York conducted approximately 110,000 virus tests on Saturday after a record 134,000 tests the day before.
