New York ticker-tape parade

On October 29, 1886, in New York City, while the Statue of Liberty was inaugurated with great fanfare, a rain of papers invaded the sky. This is one of the first “ticker-tape parades”, these parades during which we organize the release of papers from the windows of buildings. In 1867, the teleprinter was invented, a small machine which recorded stock quotes on pieces of paper and which the financial companies of Wall Street seized upon. These little ribbons of paper give ideas to traders, who send them flying through the air… Since then, ticker-tape parades have celebrated America’s heroes and events of all kinds. Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach tells you about the origins of this urban tradition.
