After the spectacle was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Snoopy, a Smurf and numerous other creatures, hearts, balls and stars slowly took shape again in front of an audience on Wednesday in the streets around the American Museum of Natural History in Central Park on, limp tarpaulins turned into huge figures.
Inflating the balloons in public the night before is a tradition popular with children in New York. The German-American puppeteer Tony Sarg was also involved in the invention of the balloon tradition in the 1920s.
Thanksgiving parade with spectators again this year
On Thursday, the giant balloons were to be carried more than three kilometers through the streets of the metropolis on the occasion of the annual Thanksgiving parade, which is organized every year by a large department store chain. Last year, the parade took place in a corona-compliant manner due to the pandemic – much smaller, only in one place and only visible to viewers online.

More than three million spectators stand at the side of the track every year, around 50 million people watch the spectacle, which is taking place for the 95th time this year, on television.
