New York sues gun lobby NRA: resolution requested

The US state of New York has sued the powerful gun lobby group National Rifle Association (NRA) for alleged financial misconduct and has demanded that the organization be dissolved. Attorney General Letitia James said today that members of the NRA leadership embezzled $ 64 million in three years.

“Fraud and abuse” had been the order of the day for years, James said after 18 months of investigation. Among other things, four leaders are said to have embezzled funds for luxury travel and given orders to family members and friends.

The NRA has not-for-profit status in the United States and is therefore subject to special donation and charity requirements. It is considered a very conservative organization with great political influence and a loyal supporter, especially of US President Donald Trump’s Republicans.

James is a member of the Democrats. Last year she had already led a process through which a Trump foundation was dissolved.
