NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York attorney general’s office said on Tuesday it has now opened a criminal investigation into the company of former President Donald Trump.
Attorney General Letitia James is investigating whether the Trump Organization has falsely declared the value of its properties to obtain loans and economic and tax benefits.
“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer of a purely civilian nature,” Fabien Levy, spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, said in a statement.
“We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization on a criminal basis, working with the Manhattan district attorney,” he said.
The Trump Organization could not be reached immediately for comment. Donald Trump said the investigation overseen by Letitia James, a Democrat, was politically motivated.
