New York state became the first in the United States to ban the use of fossil fuels, such as gas, in most new buildings starting in 2026, local authorities said.

“Changing the ways we generate and use energy to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels will help ensure a healthier environment for us and our children,” said New York State Speaker of Congress Carl Heastie.

This was established after the approval of a new law that will come into force in 2026 for new buildings with less than 7 floors and by 2029 for the tallest ones, the AFP agency reported.

This way, the gas that 3 out of 5 homes now use for heating and cooking “will be replaced by electricity from renewable energy“, they needed.

While, Existing buildings, hospitals, essential infrastructure and restaurants will be left out of these measures, which are expected to “spread across the country”, in line with the demands of ecologists and environmental activists.

The ban also affects diesel and propane heaters, fuels widely used in particular in rural areas of the state.

Critics of the new regulations argue that it limits consumer choice and will increase bills, since electricity is more expensive than gas.

The main producer of natural gas

The United States is the main producer of natural gas in the world and, after the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, in 2022 it became the main exporter of liquefied natural gas.

The new state budget, approved on Tuesday by Parliament, contemplates the creation of a Climate Action Fund to help the State in the energy transition towards cleaner and more sustainable sources in order to meet its goals of reducing emissions by 85%. greenhouse gases by 2050.
