New York seeks Pied Piper with ‘killer instinct’

The vacant head of rodent control calls the position “one of the most important duties on city council.”

The tone of the announcement is lighthearted: “Despite their successful public engagement strategy and entertaining social media presence, mice are not our friends, they are our enemies, to be conquered.”

Ratatouille

And New York has good reason for that: “They spread disease, destroy homes and electrical systems, and even try to manipulate kitchen staff into taking jobs.”

This cheery reference to the animated film “Ratatouille” might make you think the entire job posting is a joke, but it’s not: The head of rodent control could make between $120,000 and $170,000 ($114,000 – $161,000 ) and reports directly to the Deputy Mayor.

Mice are therefore a serious problem for the city. More than 21,000 reports of rats have been received this year. In late October, the municipality presented a phased plan to end the plague.

Hypnotized by mice

Eric Adams has been mayor of New York since January 1 of this year. As a boy he had a pet rat and still has a soft spot for – or rather against – rats. As a thoroughbred New Yorker, he wants to make his city cleaner by exterminating rats.

He served as Brooklyn Borough President from 2013 to this year. In that capacity, he once demonstrated a new mousetrap full of verve. As mayor, he has already made at least six proposals to end the rat plague, including a plan for rat-proof trash cans.
