New York: railway workers had built a secret cellar under Grand Central station

A little corner of paradise to end your working day out of sight. In New York, three railway workers were suspended for setting up a secret room below the famous Grand Central Terminal, says CNN. The room was fully equipped by the three men with a flat screen television connected to a decoder, a sofa, a refrigerator, a mattress and a microwave.

“Many New Yorkers have fantasized about chilling out with a cold beer at prime Manhattan real estate – especially one close to good transportation,” Carloyn Pokorny quipped. , inspector at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). “But few of them would have had the nerve to appropriate a secret room under the Grand Central Terminal and make it their ‘lair’ with the resources of the MTA”.

An anonymous letter at the origin of the alert

The three employees, a foreman carpenter, a foreman electrician and a wiremaker, obviously did not use the room only for rest. The inspectors indeed found cans of beer in addition to sheets and a duvet. The room, locked, was in a storage area under one of the dozens of tracks at the station which celebrated its centenary in 2013.

It is an anonymous letter, complaining that the “lair” was used to party and drink alcohol, which brought it to light in February 2019. The authorities assure that this space was not on any plan. The station officials didn’t even know it existed. The three employees deny any involvement. They were suspended without pay and will soon be subject to disciplinary proceedings which could lead to their final dismissal. The room could also have been visited by other employees, but the investigation does not yet allow to define an exact number.
