New York puts an end to plastic bags in stores

Until a few weeks ago, when you went to the supermarkets in New York, you could come back with dozens of plastic bags in your hand. It was also not uncommon for cashiers to double the bags, for more resistance, the famous “double bags” …
But all this is in the past! As of March 1, 2020, the law banning the distribution of plastic bags in supermarkets and stores in New York State came into force. So it concerns the whole state and not just New York City.

5 cent tax on paper bags

Customers are now required to bring their own bags or purchase paper bags, which are subject to a 5-cent tax imposed by New York State. Think about it before shopping the streets of New York!
New York is not the first US state to impose this ecological law: California and Hawaii have adopted similar measures. In Los Angeles, where the tax on paper bags stands at 10 cents, officials estimate the use of single-use bags has fallen by 94%.
