New York: One dead in fire in Trump Tower

A fire broke out on Saturday (local time) in Trump Tower in New York, the private residence of US President Donald Trump and his family. According to the fire brigade, there was one fatality, four firefighters were injured during the extinguishing work.

According to media reports, the dead man is the 67-year-old resident of an apartment on the 50th floor. He had previously been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

According to the fire protection officers, 200 firefighters and rescue workers were on duty. The flames are now under control, but it was a difficult fire, said Fire Brigade President Daniel A. Nigro at a press conference. The apartment in question was very large, contained a lot of furniture and was “practically completely on fire”. A lot of smoke had spread in the rest of the building as well. It is still unclear whether this has also reached Trump’s apartment – as is the cause of the fire.

Shortly after the first notification from the fire department and before the death was known, Trump tweeted: “The fire in Trump Tower has been extinguished.” It was “very limited”, the building was “well built” and the fire fighters did a great job.
