New York Mayor Eric Adams Calls for Border Control and Declares State of Emergency Amid Immigration Crisis

New York’s Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has been sounding the alarm about immigration for months. “We need to control the border, declare a state of emergency at the state level and provide the necessary financial resources for this national crisis,” Adams said at a recent news conference. There is no more room in the emergency shelters in New York.

Since spring 2022, 90,000 migrants have arrived in New York alone. Because there are no asylum centers in the United States, the city initially resorted to its homeless shelters. In addition, New York has set up no fewer than 188 new emergency shelters in recent months, including in closed hotels, former prisons and a warehouse at John F. Kennedy Airport.

Adams estimates the cost of dealing with the crisis this year at a whopping $4.3 billion. New York had reached its limits when it came to accepting migrants. The city can no longer cope with the influx of asylum seekers.

In April, the New York Mayor publicly accused US President Joe Biden (both politicians are members of the Democrats) of “abandoning” the city with the migrant problem. In July, New York limited the length of stay for single people in its emergency shelters to 60 days. Adams also announced that he would use leaflets to inform newcomers to the southern border about the difficult situation in his city, in other words, to deter them.

The housing and living costs in New York are very high, it says in warning words. There is no guarantee of government help. And further: “Please consider another city when deciding where to locate in the United States.”

With his criticism, Adams exacerbates the dilemma for Joe Biden. During the election campaign, the President had promised a more humane immigration policy than under his predecessor Donald Trump (2017-2021). This led to a sharp increase in migration from Latin America.

The migrant figures underpin this: while the border guards picked up almost one million illegal immigrants in 2019, in 2022 there were around 2.4 million. Ex-President Donald Trump and the Republicans therefore accuse Biden of “opening” the southern border and thus provoking an “invasion”.
