The deal would run for three seasons and a total value of US $ 21 million.

The 23-year-old hockey player, the most coveted free agent on the market, had missed the first days of the New York club’s camp.

General manager Lou Lamoriello was confident he would be able to convince Barzal to stay with the Islanders, and he did so five days before the season opener against the New York Rangers.

Barzal led the Islanders with 60 points (19-41) in 68 games last season. He added 17 points to his record in 22 playoff games with the Islanders, who reached the Eastern Finals.

Barzal was a first-round pick, 16e in total, Islanders in the 2015 NHL Draft.
