New York Governor Andrew Cuomo compares Covid-19 to the Grinch

By associating the coronavirus with this famous movie character, the Democrat wished to emphasize the “opportunist” side of the disease.

In France as in the rest of the world, the coming end of year celebrations promise to be at high risk because of the still very unstable health situation. In the United States, where Covid-19 is still extremely virulent with 63 million positive cases for nearly 1.5 million deaths since the start of the pandemic, the authorities have been organizing themselves to avoid a further increase in contamination.

“Covid Grinch”

For this, politicians do not hesitate to use comparisons that are surprising to say the least. This Monday, Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic governor of New York, the most affected state in the country with nearly 35,000 dead, explained that the disease was “opportunistic” like the Grinch, famous character of the American collective imagination interpreted by Jim Carrey in a 2000 movie and who hates Christmas celebrations.

“You have to be careful at this time. We are all very happy and we are going to meet up, have meals together, attend religious celebrations. The Covid is the Grinch, take it like that. The ‘Covid Grinch’ is a opportunist and he sees it more as a season of transmission of the virus, “he explained at first.

“All of these activities increase social interactions, mobility, and can increase virus transmission. It’s Covid Grinch season, when you hear that little music, be alert,” he added, humming the look often associated with this green character with an elastic smile.

Beyond the simple comparison, the main objective of this press conference was to remind New Yorkers of the importance of the use of barrier gestures, such as wearing a mask and social distancing. Since the election of Joe Biden announced in the November 3 ballot, the future Democratic president seems determined to also act more strongly against the disease.
