Thousands of workers, many of them Latino immigrants, cycle through the streets of New York to deliver food to homes on time, a service that has been indispensable to many during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, in an unregulated industry, they face abusive workplace conditions that they try to put a stop to.
With the health crisis caused by the pandemic, restaurants were forced to prepare food only to take away and many New Yorkers have resorted to applications to order food and supplies from other establishments, distributed by thousands of “deliveristas” such as the Guatemalan Gustavo Ajche, that he returned to this industry, where he had initially worked after arriving in New York in 2004, after losing his job in construction.
