“New York City opens 14 miles of beaches for Memorial Day weekend”

During the long weekend for Memorial Day or Memorial Day, New York City will open its 14 miles of beaches so you can come and enjoy them.

The City Parks department reported that This Saturday, May 27, all the spaces on the beaches will open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Beaches They will remain open until September 10.

“Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags. All our beaches are free and open to the public”, warns the Parks department.

Safety recommendations on the beaches of New York

If you plan to go with your family to any of the City’s beaches, you should take the following into account.

Only swim when there is a lifeguard nearby
Lifeguards are there to protect you, so only swim when and where lifeguards are on duty. A drowning can happen in seconds. It is important to always swim with a close partner, friend or a parent. Never leave children unattended near water, even when lifeguards are on duty.

Avoid unnecessary risks
Avoid swimming in restricted areas or when lifeguards are not on duty.
Be careful in deep water.
The first time you enter the water, approach or walk, do not jump or dive.
Be careful not to swim when you are tired, cold, or far from safety.
Never use alcohol while swimming, boating, or supervising children near water.

Keep an eye on the weather
Use sunscreen, drink plenty of fluids, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing to keep cool.

If you are in the water or on the beach and there is thunder or lightning, follow the instructions of lifeguards and beach staff and seek shelter in a building or vehicle.

Beware of rip currents
Rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow rapidly away from shore, occurring most frequently at low points or breaks in the sandbank and near structures such as seawalls and piers.

If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Try to stay calm and start swimming parallel to the shore. Once away from the force of the rip current, you can swim back to the beach.
