New York City officials are no longer allowed to use TikTok on their employer’s work phones and other devices. The NYC Cyber Command is banning officials from installing or using TikTok on work devices because the Chinese app poses a security risk.
According to the NYC Cyber Command, TikTok is particularly risky for “technical networks of the city,” reports The Verge after reviewing an internal memo. City government departments have therefore been given 30 days to remove TikTok from civil servants’ work devices. A ban on installing and using the app and associated website has taken effect immediately.
Social media is great for letting New Yorkers communicate with each other and the city, but we also need to make sure they can use the platforms in a safe way, the city council told The Verge.
The state of New York already banned the installation and use of TikTok on work devices in 2020. A number of departments may continue to use TikTok for marketing purposes. Several other US states have also introduced such bans in recent years. Several countries, including Norway, New Zealand, Belgium and Canada, have this policy for all their civil servants. The Dutch government recently banned TikTok on work phones of civil servants. Municipalities and provinces can make their own decisions. For example, the municipality of Amsterdam and the province of Groningen have introduced their own TikTok bans.
