New York City: 15 Places to Go When You’re Tired of the Crowd

New York City isn’t nicknamed for nothing: “the city that never sleeps† And with 10 million inhabitants and a lot of tourists on one island, it can get quite busy. But for those who know where to be, there is still peace to be found in New York City.

Stretching from 200th Street to the northernmost tip of Manhattan, this park along the Hudson contains the last patch of natural forest in all of New York City. There are few visitors as it is far from the rest… which makes it a piece of unspoilt paradise for you.

Museums are never the wildest of places, but the works of art by the Japanese-American Isamu Noguchi reinforce this: after all, they are made to arouse introspection and tranquility.

A secret even for many New Yorkers. You reach it by taking an escalator between two buildings at 55 Water Street in the Financial District.

A ruin in New York: that also still exists. Officially it is a state park, but there is not much money to maintain it. The buildings, dating from the time of the Civil War, are nevertheless impressive.

Don’t let the name fool you: in this bar you have to be as quiet as possible. The bartenders are dressed like monks, like the ones who make our abbey beers. Drinking Belgian beers should not be a problem.

Ideal for those who have had enough of buildings.

This is for those who don’t just want to take the tourist trail in Central Park, but walk all the way north, past 96th Street.

8. Panorama of the City of New York, Queens Museum, Queens

For those who want to see New York without the tourists… or for those who are afraid of heights and do not dare to go up the Empire State Building or the Chrystler Building.

Okay, this is a bit of cheating as it is right next to Fifth Avenue. However, the formal, stately garden is a haven from the busy New York outside world.

10. Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn

A resting point, and not just for the dead. Thanks to the avenues, trees and lakes.

American Museum of Natural History

Not quite clear why, but the hall and the huge blue whale hardly attract any visitors. There are 750 sea creatures to be found, so you don’t have to feel lonely right away.

Warning: not in the summer! Then festivals and parties are organised, but beyond that it is deserted. Ideal for unique views of Manhattan Island.

13. Rose Main Reading Room, New York Public Library, Manhattan

You are not exactly alone, but you can not call it a crowd and it is quiet there.

A park on the East River with beautiful views of the Midtown skyline. Tip: ideal for a sunset photo!

This artwork by Walter De Maria is located in SoHo. It’s a room full of dirt and that’s what it smells like. For the rest it is extremely quiet. Source: Mashable
