New York Celebrates: Superstars Concert in Central Park

NEW YORK (AP) – The sounds of music will be heard Saturday night in New York’s Central Park, where thousands of people will gather for a superstars concert planned in celebration of the city’s recovery from the pandemic of coronavirus.

Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Jennifer Hudson, Carlos Santana, LL Cool J and Andrea Bocelli are among the artists scheduled for the so-called “Homecoming Concert”.

The Saturday show follows a series of hip-hop concerts in the past week at various outdoor venues around the city.

Despite the joyful intentions, the concert will be held amid concern about the more contagious delta variant of the coronavirus.

In the past week, New York City has averaged fewer than 2,000 new cases a day, according to state figures. That is up from less than 200 cases a day at the end of June. Only 54% of the city’s residents are fully vaccinated.

Those attending the concert must show proof of vaccination. The show will be broadcast on television.

Artists such as Barry Manilow, Wyclef Jean, Elvis Costello, Cynthia Erivo and Patti Smith are also expected to perform as a duet with Springsteen.
