In Jamaica Bay, not far from JFK Airport, you can observe more than three hundred species of birds in the heart of a national park considered one of the largest nature reserves in the United States. Neglected for decades, soiled by garbage and sewage, this swamp was doomed to disappear. It owes its salvation to the sustained efforts of local residents like Don Riepe.
