The biggest enemy of New York residents are rats, reason for Mayor Eric Adams to appoint a ‘rat saar’. The rats in the American metropolis will hate Kathy Corradi with her knowledge, drive and experience, the mayor predicts on Twitter.
The city has already done a lot to combat rats, but to eliminate the rodents completely, a “dedicated rat tsar” has now been appointed for the first time. Her work starts in the densely populated Harlem neighborhood, where $ 3.5 million is initially being invested in rat control.
Corradi, a former teacher, must use stamina to decimate the “cunning and voracious rat population”. As an expert at the city’s education department, she has already gained experience in this area. Now she will oversee New York’s existing army of rat experts. “You’ll see a lot of me and a lot less rats,” Corradi said, according to The New York Times.
Inspectors registered twice as many rats in New York last year as a year earlier. According to the city council, this is due to the expansion of inspections, but the increase can also be attributed to cuts in sanitation.
Mayor Adams has claimed that his house was overrun by rats as a child. He received scorn from animal rights activists when, in a previous position, he demonstrated a device that drowned rodents in a bucket.
