An Italian student at Columbia University was stabbed to death Thursday night in New York by a young man, already imprisoned for violence, who then stabbed a second Italian and attacked a third bystander, according to concurring sources.
New York police confirmed to AFP on Friday the death of “Davide Giri, 30”, who died in hospital of his injuries to the abdomen after being stabbed in the Harlem district, in the north -west of Manhattan, very close to the Columbia campus.
In separate statements, University President Lee Bollinger confirmed the “tragic loss” of Davide Giri, a student at Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. For its part, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed “a serial knife attack in which an Italian was killed and another injured”.
In fact, according to the police, a second 27-year-old man was injured by stab wounds to the chest, in the same neighborhood as the first attack. Taken to hospital, he is in stable condition.
The alleged assailant, a 25-year-old man according to police, was arrested shortly after the second attack, north of Central Park, when he threatened with a knife a third man aged 29.
Gang
The Daily News, which published the photos of the deceased Italian and his alleged killer on Friday, described the assailant as a gang member from the Queens neighborhood of New York, who had already served four years jail and was arrested multiple times for a series of assaults.
Crime and misdemeanor indicators in New York had picked up again in 2020 during the pandemic but have seen a lull this year.
