Kia introduced the bigger and bolder 2023 Niro small SUV at the New York Auto Show this morning. This presentation of the North American version of the new Niro confirms the bolder style that we had previously seen for the model launched just a few months ago.
Once again, our Niro will be available in three versions, including a hybrid variant, a plug-in hybrid model and a purely electric version. The latter has a maximum range of 253 miles, according to Kia, which corresponds to just over 407 km. Like the current model, it has a 201 horsepower electric motor and a 64.8 kWh battery pack, and it’s DC fast-charging compatible; recharging its battery from 10 to 80% should be possible in just 45 minutes on such a connection.
The Niro PHEV is equipped with an 11.1 kWh battery that offers a range of 53 km in all-electric mode, and a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine. On a Level 2 charger, Kia gives a full charge time of less than three hours.
As for the hybrid version, it too will run at least in part on electricity, as it gets a mild-hybrid system to complement the same 139-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine under the hood, working in tandem. with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The most sweeping changes for 2023 are to the Niro’s exterior styling as well as the interior layout and equipment. For the exterior, the images included here tell the story of a much bolder and more aggressive approach to the rather sedentary-looking outgoing model. Inside, Kia promises more space for the occupants, which is to be expected since the SUV is growing in length, width and height.
The interior also includes more durable materials and welcomes additional technological features, for example the new standard driver assistance systems like pedestrian detection, lane keeping assistance and blind spot monitoring. Options include adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving capability. Note however that this presentation concerns the Niro intended for the American market and that there may be differences in the models reserved for Canada.
All three versions of the 2023 Kia Niro will arrive at North American dealerships this summer. Prices should be announced shortly before their arrival.
