New Wholesale Vegetable and Fruit Market Set to Transform Rabat’s Akkari District

This new wholesale vegetable and fruit market is to replace the wholesale markets currently existing in the Akkari district of Rabat, as well as those in Temara and Salé, the capital’s twin city. The major works, in particular those of the earthworks of this complex, had started in January 2023. The new structure will be operational in 2024. The large area reserved for this building is located in the heart of the Bouregreg valley, below the popular district of Takaddoum and El Youssoufia at the ramp to the highway leading to Tangier and Fez.

This new hall, the owner of which is the Rabat Development Company, will require a total investment of approximately 1.2 billion dirhams. The land title for the Akkari wholesale market had been mortgaged by the former town hall of Rabat to the Communal Fund. The sale of the land on which this new covered market is built will allow the mortgage to be lifted, according to a municipal source. It should be noted that Rabat has equipped itself with a large modern slaughterhouse built in Sidi Bouknadel, on the national road from Salé to Kénitra. The date of its inauguration has not yet been set. The current slaughterhouse located in the Akkari district will be destroyed with the option of using its land for other projects, according to the same source.
