New warning for Istanbul: “We expect an earthquake of more than 7 Richter” (Video) – 2024-03-07 10:22:25

The debate about the possibility of a major earthquake in Constantinopleespecially after the magnitude 4.9 “shock” in the Dardanelles, which seismologists from Turkey and other countries have characterized as a “harbinger” of greater activity.

The Professor of Geology and Natural Disaster Management, Efthymios Lekkas spoke to “Socionia Ora MEGA” about a possible earthquake in Istanbul and the consequences that such a development would bring.

“There is a widespread opinion among scientists all over the world and Turks that a great earthquake is imminent in Istanbul and all scientific groups document it. The last earthquakes we had in Bursa and the Dardanelles are considered by many to be the trigger for the said seismic activity in Istanbul”he initially noted.

“The reason is that one piece of the Anatolian Fault that has 13 pieces, 12 of them have broken. The penultimate one broke in 1999. The last piece south of Istanbul in the underwater area, in the Gulf of Marmara, remains to be activated. This part is 65 km long which can produce an earthquake of more than 7 degrees.

It had been determined that by 2020 there should be a 7 Richter earthquake but it didn’t happen and the trends are still accumulating in the area. The rift is still dormant for now. Within a 5-year period there are more than 80% chances that the fault will break and we will have an earthquake. The probability that it will happen within the next few weeks is about 40% according to scientific calculations that have been made. As the years go by the trends accumulate and the size grows. This is the view of scientists all over the world.” underlined.

Regarding the stability of the buildings, Mr. Lekkas emphasized: “Tsunami signs show where to go after the earthquake. Someone must leave immediately after the vibration, not even a second later. There is an increased chance of an earthquake. If the maximum of the earthquake we are expecting occurs, 1/3 of the buildings in Kon/city, the old buildings, will fall immediately.”
