New Striker Leonardo Vonic Signs with Rot-Weiss Essen: What to Expect from the Deal

Essen.
New striker for Rot-Weiss Essen: Leonardo Vonic comes from 1. FC Nürnberg. What the top scorer and the third division hope for from the deal.

Rot-Weiss Essen has signed Leonardo Vonic. The 20-year-old striker comes from 1. FC Nürnberg – and brings an exciting profile with him.

On Monday, a report in the “Bild” newspaper revealed that RWE was probably interested in the talent. The official confirmation followed on Tuesday. Vonic, who has scored 29 goals in 36 regional league games, signed for Hafenstrasse until the summer of 2026.

“Leo is a young, very hungry and ambitious player who has a great desire to score goals and is always looking for a finish. He has a lot of depth in his game, a strong move towards the goal, a good one-on-one and thanks to his two-footedness he can be used variably on the wings, as a hanging point or in the center of the attack. With this flexibility and his thirst for goals, Leo will make us stronger,” said head coach Christoph Dabrowski.

Rot-Weiss Essen is the “right club” for Vonic

The newcomer himself says: “After my time in Nuremberg, the moment has now come for me to really settle into professional football. I was really impressed by how hard Christian Flüthmann, Marcus Steegmann and coach Christoph Dabrowski tried to help me, so it was clear to me that RWE was the right club for me.”

Rot-Weiss Essen in the training camp:

Steegmann, sports director, is looking forward to a “flexible and accurate attacker” who will make the offensive even more dangerous: “The fact that the transfer is now going through is not least due to Leo himself, who has given up part of his salary and thus once again underlined how much he identifies with this task. Due to his age, his development is far from over, and we will certainly benefit from him in terms of fulfilling the U23 rule.”

Vonic is considered to be highly talented – but as can be heard from “Club” circles, he has to be more actively involved in the game. This criticism could be heard, for example, from CEO Dieter Hecking. In any case, he impressively demonstrated his eye for goal in Nuremberg. The step into the third division is therefore one step forward for him, since he lacked the prospects at FCN.

RWE was still looking for a striker

Rot-Weiss was still looking for reinforcements for the storm and found them in Vonic. He is the third nominal striker in the squad alongside Moussa Doumbouya and Ron Berlinski, although all three could also play on the flanks.
