ANTARIKSA — On February 19, 2008, a new, state-of-the-art scientific laboratory was completed on board the International Space Station (ISS). Over the past week, the Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered the Columbus Laboratory to the ISS and installed the seven-meter-long module.
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Columbus module is equipped with ten racks for experiments that can be controlled from the ISS or the Columbus Control Center in Germany. The first set of experiments includes a Fluid Science Laboratory that will explore the properties of fluids in the microgravity of low Earth orbit, and a Biolab that supports experiments on microorganisms.
Columbus’s experiments would include an atomic clock that would test very small time effects, including those proposed by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. Scientists from around the world can also propose and carry out experiments in the laboratory during the mission. Source: NASA
