New sanctions will be imposed on Russia; they will affect banks, state-owned enterprises, foreign trade

Following the atrocities committed by the Russian military against the civilian population in Ukraine, the G7 countries agreed on Thursday to impose new sanctions on Russia.

G7 leaders agreed to ban “new investment in key sectors of Russia’s economy, including the energy sector,” the G7 said in a statement.

Prohibitions on the export of certain goods to Russia will be extended, as will restrictions on goods from Russia, and sanctions against Russian banks and state-owned enterprises will be increased.

Sanctions will also target the Russian defense sector.

G7 leaders also pledged to step up their campaign against Russia’s elite in support of President Vladimir Putin and his ongoing war against Ukraine.

The G7 also said it would work harder to reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources.

It is planned to phase out Russian coal and eventually ban coal imports from Russia, as well as to work harder to reduce its dependence on Russian oil.
