New Sahara dust cloud for the weekend

A new cloud of dust from the Sahara will affect Puerto Rico during today, Saturday, and tomorrow, so misty conditions are expected for the archipelago.

Meteorologist Fernanda Ramos, from National Weather Service (SNM) told Metro that “for tomorrow (today) we are seeing another cloud of dust from the Sahara that is approaching the area and will be on Saturday and Sunday.”

He clarified that the radar images are not showing that the event is as dense as the past days.

However, it will bring misty conditions, warm temperatures and downpour limitation by the increase in temperature.

“If some type of rain activity occurs it will be very limited and water accumulation on roads or floods is not expected,” Ramos said.

Mist conditions are expected to improve next Monday and Tuesday.

However, they observe a tropical wave by midweek that “may increase the probability of downpours for the island”.

In the past few days, a Sahara dust event kept the island with a level of haze not seen for decades. The airports they were particularly affected as visibility has been reduced to between three and five miles.

Health experts have advised citizens, especially those who suffer from respiratory conditions, to stay in their homes and avoid going out due to the possible complications they may experience due to the poor air quality due to the dust cloud.
