New presidential elections / Day to be held in Belarus

According to Zelensky in an interview with the TV channel Euronews, he would do so if he were to replace Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus.

“How can I reassure everyone? I would say specifically – there will be new elections in a month. And I will vote in the new elections. Who else wants to participate – go ahead!” said the President of Ukraine.

Zelensky also stressed that all possible international observers would be invited to the elections.

The second mass march on Minsk’s main street, Independence Avenue, is scheduled for Sunday, demanding Lukashenko’s resignation and new elections. Several hundred thousand people took part in the first march last Sunday.

On Independence Square in the center of Minsk near the Government House on Saturday, several thousand people attended an evening rally against Lukashenko. Protests also took place in other Belarusian cities on Saturday.

Protests against the falsification of the August 9 presidential election and authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, who have often escalated into protesters’ clashes with security forces, remain unabated in Belarus. Thousands have been detained and several hundred injured in protests. Workers in many state-owned enterprises are on strike.

According to official results, Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, won 80.1% of the vote, while opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovska won 10.1%, but the opposition believes the election results are fake and Tikhanovska has won the election. European Union countries do not recognize election results.
