New Pokémon TCG Expansion, Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames, Set to Release Next Week

The Pokémon Trading Card Game releases its latest expansion, Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames, next week. With Charizard serving as the figurehead Pokemon for this expansion, it’s sure to be a popular release given Pocket Monster’s particular history with the TCG.

This expansion continues to build on the Scarlet and Violet games with even more Paldean species, but also adds Tera Pokemon ex. This mechanic is reminiscent of the Delta Species mechanic from the early 2000s, where a Pokémon’s strongest form could be of a different type than its evolutionary chain. However, the changed-type Tera Pokémon exes make sense in the context of the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games, as Tera Pokémon often change types when they Terastalize. One of the Marquee Type Switch Tera Pokemon is a former Dark-type Charizard.

Obsidian Flames adds more than 190 new cards to the TCG, including more than 20 new Pokémon ex cards, more than 15 Trainer cards, and a ton of specially illustrated Trainer and Pokémon cards. The Pokémon Company sent us a bunch of booster packs so we can see what we can get out of it. You can see my favorite cards I got in the gallery below.

At first I was disappointed in my jerks; I got some favorites like Clefable and Scizor early on, but was inundated with the same Darkrai and Geeta cards over and over again. However, that was only until I got to my last two booster packs when I apparently caught fire. There, in back-to-back booster packs, I pulled my two Charizard cards, one of which is a special rare illustration. I also managed to get a hyper-rare Artazon card, complete with gold trim. This may not be like my favorite expansion, the Pokémon Trading Card Game, but I still love several of the cards included in this set.

Pokémon Trading Card Game: Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames hits store shelves on August 11, though some Build & Battle Boxes are already available.
