Just in time for the start of the weekend, a new patent ensures fresh speculation. This suggests that the PS5 could come with a possible picture-in-picture function, as it was offered in the early years of the Xbox One.

Even though Sony Interactive Entertainment gave us a first look at the games and the final design of the PS5 a few days ago, according to the company, one or two surprises are still waiting to be revealed.
A new patent from Sony, which points to a further feature of the PS5, caused fresh speculation just in time for the weekend. While the patent relates to an “image processing device”, it appears to be more suited to multi-screen display or a picture-in-picture function. For example, “a main screen with main content” and “a subscreen with subcontents of a different type than the main content at the same time as the main screen” are mentioned.

“The information processing device receives a switching operation to change from a mode for receiving an operation on the main screen to a mode for receiving an operation on the sub-screen […] The mode for receiving an operation on the subscreen is performed in parallel, ”the patent goes on to say.

It is speculated that we are dealing with a feature that can be compared to the snap feature of Xbox One. Before this was removed for performance reasons, it was possible on Microsoft’s console to display a second window while playing, for example on YouTube or Netflix. A feature that Sony Interactive Entertainment may have picked up on.
Especially since the consoles of the new generation should have enough power to implement the snap feature without performance problems. So far, it has only been officially confirmed that the PS5 has been given a completely revised user interface with various innovations.
