China’s biggest Covid-19 outbreak in recent months has spread to two more parts of the country, health officials said on Saturday.
The National Health Commission reported 55 new cases of Covid-19 in areas involving Fujian Province and Chongqing Municipality. Outbreaks of the Covid-19 delta variant have previously been reported in four other provinces and in Beijing Municipality.
More than 200 cases of infection detected across China this month are linked to a set of cases in Jiangsu Province, where nine cleaners at Nanjing International Airport on July 20 tested positive for Covid-19.
Nanjing city authorities ordered not to open tourist attractions and cultural sites on Saturday.
Hundreds of thousands of people are being quarantined in Jiangsu Province, the capital of Nanjing. In Nanjing, all 9.2 million people have been tested twice.
In the tourist city of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, where several infected people had attended one theater show, all 1.5 million people were quarantined on Friday and all tourist attractions were closed.
In China’s Changping district, where two locally transmitted infections have been reported, 41,000 people in nine housing communities were quarantined on Thursday.
China had previously been proud of its success in suppressing the Covid-19 pandemic by establishing the world’s first quarantine of the virus in early 2020, when Covid-19 began spreading from Wuhan.
This success is threatened by this month’s Covid-19 outbreak, fueled by the rapid spread of the delta variant.-
