New mobilization of health personnel in front of the Montauban hospital center (Haute-Garonne). From July 1, access to emergency rooms in Montauban and Moissac hospitals will no longer be free.. The reason is the lack of staff.
For several months, the Departmental Federation of Hospital Emergencies of 82 has been facing great difficulties in recruiting emergency physicians.
“Medical staff denounce the fact that there are not enough doctors to deal with emergencies. There would be a shortage of 15 full-time equivalents between Montauban and Moissac“, according to our colleague on site.
Organized by the CGT, this mobilization of staff also worries patients worried about not being able to go to the emergency room. As well as for the elderly who may find it difficult to describe their symptoms and therefore find it difficult to be directed to services.

Since December 2021, Moissac emergencies have already been closed at night. A decision taken by the Regional Health Agency to deal with the shortage of doctors. Currently, 15 out of 38 positions are vacant.
This nurse – who wishes to remain anonymous – from the extra-hospital psychiatry service in Montauban explains: “Today in psychiatry, we no longer have doctors to function, we no longer find nurses either. Patients who live outside Montauban will for some have to travel several tens of kilometers to be taken care of. We are clearly heading towards an abandonment of care for these patients. There is a crying deficit of caregivers, we are helpless in the face of this situation.”
For several weeks, working groups have implemented a system that has already been tested elsewhere in France: le Access to Care Service (SAS).
The objective of the SAS is to refocus the activity of emergency physicians and caregivers on emergencies and in priority vital emergencies. Any admission to the emergency room will be made on referral from the attending physician or by telephone call to 15 or 3966.
This will make it possible to direct the patient towards the structure adapted to the request for care:
- doctor,
- Immediate Care Medical Center,
- Emergency room
- or intervention at the SMUR for vital interventions.

Also faced with a lack of staff, the Lavaur emergency service in the Tarn is temporarily closing its night service from June 13 to July 15, 2022. The Tarn departmental council is asking the State for lasting solutions to allow hospitals to operate normally.
