New Members of the Bulgarian Constitutional Court Appointed for 9-Year Term

Until recently, the chairman of the PG of GERB Desislava Atanasova and judge Boris Belazelkov are the new members of the SC from the parliament’s quota. They will hold office for the next nine years.

Atanasova was elected with 159 votes “for” by the deputies, and Belazelkov with 154.

Atanasova and Belazelkov replace Atanas Atanasov and Grozdan Iliev in the Constitutional Court, whose mandate expired two years ago.

There were three candidates for new constitutional judges. In addition to Atanasova, nominated by GERB and Belazelkov, nominated by PP-DB, Tsveta Rangelova from Vazrazhdane also fought for a post in the Central Committee. As expected, she did not gather the necessary support to become a constitutional judge.

BSP leader Kornelia Ninova announced that the left will prepare an appeal to the Supreme Court to appeal the decision on the 9-year term of the constitutional judges, because this decision of the National Assembly contradicts a decision of the Supreme Court from two days ago. She said that KS is being victimized today.

“He has been taken over from the inside with the new constitutional judges, because without any doubt these people will carry out political orders. Key decisions about statehood are made in the Constitutional Court and I have no doubt how Desislava Atanasova will make a decision if Boyko Borisov calls her,” he said she.

“All the time you talk about a new model, that the severe political crisis requires new solutions and dialogue, but no, Mr. Ivanov, Borisov and Peevski, there is no new model, it is the same model created by Borisov, which you enriched, you did not change the regime, but you deepened it and recorded corruption in the law and ended its prosecution,” she accused the rulers.
