New iPad Pro models – thinner, OLED, M4 chip

According to market intelligence company TrendForce, the demand for the latest iPad Pro models, featuring OLED screens and an uber-thin form factor, is predicted to be lower than last year. The company forecasted the total shipment of these models to reach only 4.5 to 5 million units in the year 2024, which indicates a decline compared to 2023.

Brighter, Thinner and More Powerful

Apple unveiled its new iPad Pro models, highlighting three major improvements. Firstly, the iPads now come with a significantly thinner form factor. Secondly, the introduction of OLED screens enhances the visual experience for users. Lastly, the M4 chip boosts the performance and power efficiency of the devices.

Demand likely to be relatively low

TrendForce suggests that despite the exciting new features, the demand for iPad Pros is expected to experience a year-on-year decline. The company attributes this decline to two contributing factors. The first factor is the increase in starting price, with the new models receiving a $200 price increase, albeit with doubled storage. Additionally, the requirement of purchasing accessories, including the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro, makes the total cost of upgrading significantly more expensive. The second factor affecting demand is the release of the 13-inch iPad Air, presenting consumers with an alternative to the iPad Pro series, without having to invest in unnecessary Pro features. TrendForce emphasizes that the introduction of the 13-inch iPad Air has the potential to dilute consumer interest, ultimately impacting the demand for other models such as the new iPad Pro.

Apple still taking half the market

Although the demand for the new iPad Pro models is estimated to be lower than anticipated, TrendForce projects that Apple will still dominate the market, claiming about half of the market share. It is essential to note that the total shipment of AMOLED tablets in 2024 is projected to reach approximately 9 million units, accounting for around 7% of the overall tablet market.
