New Invention: Paint that Keeps Houses Warm in Winter and Cool in Summer

A new type of paint capable of keeping houses warm in winter and cool in summer has been invented.

The discovery of Stanford University scientists is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists have set a goal to significantly reduce energy consumption by coating buildings with a special paint. Thanks to this discovery, energy costs have fallen and greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced.

The new paint works by reflecting infrared radiation. The paint consists of two layers, which are applied separately. The first transparent layer reflects infrared radiation by means of aluminum flakes, while the second layer works by means of inorganic nanoparticles. The top coat of paint is available in a wide range of colors. The scientists tested paints in white, blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple and dark gray. The researchers demonstrated that the new paints reflect light in the mid-high infrared 10 times better than classic paints of the same colors.
