New Injectable Cell Therapy for Osteoarthritis Offers Hope for a Cure, Say Scientists

A new injectable cell therapy has been developed by scientists to treat osteoarthritis, which is believed to significantly reduce inflammation and promote cartilage regeneration. Osteoarthritis is a prevalent health condition that affects over 520 million people across the globe. It is typically caused by mechanical or traumatic stress in the joints, leading to damaged cartilage that cannot be repaired naturally. This revolutionary therapy is expected to advance towards a cure for osteoarthritis. The study was conducted by Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and senior author and director of WFIRM Anthony Atala stated, “Cartilage activated immune cells that target inflammation, combined with progenitor cells aid tissue regeneration… It’s really a dynamic communication between these two cell populations that are crucial for the efficacy of the treatment.” The results of the study have been published in the journal Science Advances.
