New fire breaks out in Ponte de Lima

The fire that started at 00:57 in Poiares, in the municipality of Ponte de Lima, was said to have subsided at about 17:00, the second district civil protection commander, Paulo Barreiros, informed Lusa today.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, Paulo Barreiros explained that the flames “did not cause human or material damage”, and “as a precaution, around 11:30 am, 10 people, residing in Carreiras, were displaced from their homes, having I return about half an hour later ”.

Paulo Barreiros said that “the intense heat that was felt was the main difficulty that firefighters faced in combating the fire that spread quickly and strongly”.

The second Civil Protection District Operational Commander (CODIS) from Viana do Castelo added “this is the third major fire to start in Ponte de Lima, during the night and early morning”.

At the site, according to Paulo Barreiros, 137 operational vehicles and 53 vehicles remain.

Early in the afternoon, the commander of the Ponte de Lima Fire Department, Carlos Lima, said that a plan had been prepared for the eventual evacuation of villages located along the route of the three active fronts of the fire.

By 14:45, and according to the Civil Protection website, that fire was being fought by eight air means, in addition to 131 men and 39 vehicles.

During the morning of today, five aerial means, four heavy and one coordinating, were fighting a fire that started at 00:58, in Poiares, Ponte de Lima, passing in the morning to Carvoeiro, in Viana do Castelo, said the protection civil.

Viana and Braga at maximum risk

More than a hundred municipalities in 14 districts in mainland Portugal today have a maximum risk of fire, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

At maximum risk are more than 100 municipalities in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Aveiro, Guarda, Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre and Faro.

Burning and burning is prohibited

According to ANEPC, a gradual rise in maximum temperature, tropical nights, low relative humidity and low to moderate wind are expected over the next few days.

In the warning to the population, ANEPC recalls that, until September 30, it is forbidden to burn and burn, to use stoves and grills in all rural areas, to smoke or to make any kind of fire in the forest spaces, to launch balloons of lit fuse and rockets and fireworks.

The Civil Protection also states that it is forbidden to fumigate or disinfect apiaries and use machine guns, cutters and destroyers on days of maximum fire risk.
