New European Commission emission targets. “End of internal combustion engine inevitable”

On Wednesday, the European Commission under the “Fit for 55” package proposed that CO2 emissions should fall by 55 percent by 2030. compared to 2021 for passenger cars and by 50 percent. in the case of vans.

– This means an increase in the reduction value by over 50%. in the case of passenger cars and almost 70 percent. for vans compared to the target set only 3 years ago – noted Mazur in an interview with PAP.

As he assessed, this is an ambitious goal that translates into a significant reduction in the number of cars with combustion engines on the road.

The target shape of the EU regulations will be developed in the course of (probably very intense and long-lasting) negotiations between the Commission, Parliament and the Council.

As emphasized by Maciej Mazur, the final wording of the regulation remains an open matter, but the end of the internal combustion engine in Europe is inevitable – In order to fully decarbonise transport, the European Union will also use other tools, such as the planned Euro 7 standard – assessed the expert.

From January 1, 2020, the EURO 6d standard applies, according to which the permissible emission level of passenger vehicles is 95 g / km. In 2023, the ratio is to be tightened. Another standard – EURO 7 is to enter into force in 2025.

As many as 9 countries of the Community (headed by Denmark, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands) turned to the European Commission arguing that a common deadline for withdrawing combustion cars should be set for all EU countries.

This, in turn, would accelerate the process of switching the European automotive industry to the production of electricians. The Danes expect that after 2029, no more cars with an internal combustion engine will leave the production lines.
