Other German cities such as Frankfurt am Main, Dortmund and Munich are also part of the European Commission’s campaign, according to a statement on Thursday.
According to the information, a total of 100 EU cities and 12 partner cities have agreed to achieve the climate target with the help of the EU Commission.
75 percent of EU citizens live in cities. “So it’s important that cities serve as ecosystems for experimentation and innovation to help everyone else become carbon neutral by 2050.”

The project is to be financed by 360 million euros by 2023.
In concrete terms, the cities should invest in clean transport options, energy efficiency and green spaces, for example, and can receive research funds and advice for this. They should present a plan with clear goals so that all sectors – energy, buildings, waste and more – become climate-neutral, i.e. no longer emit climate-damaging gases that cannot be bound.

In addition to the nine German cities, there are also capitals such as Paris, Brussels, Madrid, Rome and Istanbul.
As part of its climate goals, the EU has set itself the goal of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO₂ by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 and becoming climate-neutral by 2050.
